Uruguay: at least 80 cases of coronavirus on board an Australian liner

At least 80 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed on board an Australian ocean liner at anchor off Montevideo, the shipowner said on Monday (April 6th).

According to the Australian cruise company Aurora Expeditions, tests with Covid-19 have been carried out on board by the Uruguayan health authorities. For the time being, " 81 passengers and crew members have tested positive " and " 90 test results are still pending, " the company said in a statement. In addition, " 45 passengers and crew members were tested negative ".

Greg Mortimer, also contaminated

The flag of the Bahamas Islands, Greg Mortimer, left Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 15 for a cruise in Antarctica and in the British island of South Georgia, located a thousand km east of the islands Falklands, in the South Atlantic.

The Urguayan Ministry of Health had previously announced that " at least 60 passengers " among the approximately 200 people on board the Greg Mortimer were infected. Six “ life-threatening ” people were authorized to disembark and were hospitalized. The rest of the passengers and crew remain on board the ship, which anchors some 20 km from the port of Montevideo.

The approximately 200 passengers and crew members, mostly Australian, New Zealand and British, had been stranded for almost ten days on board the Greg Mortimer, off Montevideo, after the landing ban issued by the Uruguayan authorities.
