INTERVIEW - The director of the Foundation for research on administrations and public policies (iFRAP) disputes the need for a return of the State to the economy.


Do you want to lower taxes and corporate charges while reducing France's debt? Is it not contradictory?

No, it's the opposite! To be able to continue to levy taxes and social security contributions, as many businesses as possible must remain alive after this crisis. It is in the interest of companies, of those who work there, but also of the State, communities and Social Security. Lowering taxes will certainly widen the public deficit in the first instance, but will allow jobs and public revenues to be preserved in the second instance. When we have saved our economy and our jobs, in a second step which will coincide with the presidential election of 2022, we will have to plan a great plan of lowering public spending to reduce the weight of our debt.

You criticize the too important place of the State but, at the moment, we are very happy to find it, right?
