Alstom confirms its lead in hydrogen trains

After 18 months of conclusive tests, the French manufacturer will start delivering 41 Coradia iLint trainsets to the Länder of Lower Saxony and Hesse from 2022.


Successful world first for Alstom. The manufacturer of the TGV, trams and metros, has validated its hydrogen train technology, after having tested, in real commercial conditions, two pre-production cars from its Coradia iLint range on two lines in the Land of Lower Saxony (Germany). After 18 months of testing, the two trainsets, put into service in September 2018, had traveled 180,000 km. With this pilot operation, “ we have demonstrated that it is possible to use fuel cell technology for the daily transport of passengers. This success makes us a major player in the market for green and sustainable mobility solutions for rail transport.Says Jörg Nikutta, CEO of Alstom Transport Deutschland. An energy transition imperative supported by the European Union as part of its “Green Deal” and stimulus plans in the face of the Covid-19 crisis.
