Spain plans to welcome French, German and Scandinavian tourists from the end of June. This is indeed the ambition of a pilot project on which the Spanish government is working to allow the restarting of tourist activity after the coronavirus pandemic which left more than 27,000 dead on the other side of the Pyrenees. The country is the second world tourist destination and tourism weighs 12% of the GDP there.
The head of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez announced a week ago that the country would reopen its borders to foreign tourists "from the month of July" with the lifting of the quarantine imposed on people arriving in the country.
Direction the Balearics or the Canaries
But according to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, the arrival of holidaymakers could be authorized in June in the Balearic and Canary archipelagos, the only two regions having asked for the moment to participate in this test project. The authorities are counting on the date of June 22 to start receiving tourists from Germany, France or the Scandinavian countries.
The countries chosen were chosen because they have an epidemiological situation better or similar to that of Spain. British nationals, the main contingent of tourists in Spain, would therefore, for the time being, be excluded from the scheme due to the less favorable epidemiological situation across the Channel.
The Spanish government now hopes that other regions such as Andalusia, Catalonia or Valencia will apply to participate in the project.
