Poll: French people more afraid of unemployment than coronavirus

2020-06-01T12:08:52.831Z

The results of an Ifop study for the strategic consultancy No Com, which we are revealing, show that the French are dreaded

The deconfinement modified the French report to the two crises in progress, that of the epidemic of coronavirus and that of the economic crisis which ensues from it. The fear of the latter (+20 points) now prevails over health concerns, according to the results of an Ifop study for the consultancy firm No Com, which we exclusively disclose.

The same study, three weeks earlier, highlighted "a state of mind of our compatriots tormented between two fears" who competed "without one does not crush the other", observed then Pierre Giacometti, co-founder from No Com. Why is the balance of fear now tilting towards the economy? "Because the French have observed a receding epidemic, analyzes Pierre Giacometti. The daily death statistic has been replaced by stories of bankruptcy and economic concerns. "

Second observation: “The fears concerning the economy are shared by all social categories but in very strong progression among the popular categories. The concern is linked to the gradual reduction of partial unemployment and threats to employment, especially for business leaders, traders, artisans, and all self-employed workers. For the other categories, it remains above all - for the moment - a concern… of the unknown, because the economic crisis has “not necessarily effects in terms of standard of living and income” for some of the French , underlines Pierre Giacometti.

However, fears about the epidemic have not disappeared when respondents are asked about their personal situation. "The French, while worried about the economy, continue to believe that the cursor must be placed on the precautionary principle, which risks explaining the relative slowness of the economic recovery", warns Jérôme Fourquet, director of the “Opinion and business strategies” department of Ifop.

"An eruptive French opinion"

Slow restart due to the explosive social context! After the yellow vests crisis in 2018 and months of tension linked to the pension reform in 2019-2020, "all the ingredients are there for a very strong social tension in the coming months", estimates Pierre Giacometti by evoking "a eruptive French opinion ”.

Finally, the ranking of actors deemed to be trustworthy has changed little. Doctors, hospitals and pharmacists take the top three steps of the podium, but their scores are falling. “-4, -3 and -6 points, when you are so close to the top, it's a very small statistical effect. Nothing is in question ... ”The police, for their part, recorded a slight increase: two thirds of French people consider that they have done their job well. While several polemics had punctuated the news, it shows "that they are assimilated to individual drifts," says Jérôme Fourquet.

However, the experts plummet (-11 points). The reason? "The controversy over chloroquine!" Who's wrong? Who is right? Scientists as graded as each other have come to contradict each other on the set… ”sighs Jérôme Fourquet. At the bottom of the ranking, the government finds a few colors (+6 points). "The restart is slow, but the health indicators have not gone back into the red," said the director at Ifop. The government capitalizes (a little) on "an exit from the crisis deemed well managed".
