Supermarkets claim to have been able to reduce their costs, a drop that they will soon pass on to the price of protective measures.

The fear of a second wave and the obligation to wear it in several cities, even outdoors, may have precipitated the purchase of masks. In any case, this is one of the explanations provided by the players in the mass distribution, who anticipate a drop in the price, from the start of the school year, of these protections against the coronavirus, the amount of which was capped from the month of May to 0, 95 euro.

This Sunday, with the JDD, the president of the Intermarché and Netto stores, Thierry Cotillard, predicted: "The masks will become a product of appeal in the same way as Coca-Cola or Nutella", ensuring that "all the brands are 'are preparing to make commercial offers for the start of the school year. "

Retailers, who now have more time to anticipate their purchases of these masks, often surgical, unlike the purchases made in the emergency in March, April and May, should manage to drastically lower their costs of supply. The main suppliers, located in China, have greatly increased their production and deliveries can be done by boat, which reduces these costs, underlines the JDD.

Prices cut in half?

Savings that these French large distribution companies, which still have stock, should pass on to the purchase price offered to customers, once these first stocks have been sold at the current price.

According to the Sunday daily, Intermarché could halve its prices: thus, a box of 50 masks would cost around 12 euros, against 25 currently. Carrefour also confirms a drop in prices, but remains mysterious about its amount, and claims to the JDD not to want "to enter into a competition of brands on this product".

The director of Intermarché is in any case not worried about the fact that all these masks will be sold very quickly. Thierry Cotillard confirms to our colleagues that, since the summer, the sale of masks has started again. If, after a peak of purchase during confinement, he noted the sale of 150,000 masks per week in June, in July, "the figures have just risen to one million units, or 18% of the market, according to the Nielsen Research Company ”.

The week of July 13, the Nielsen company actually found that supermarkets had achieved a turnover of 27 million euros related to masks and 24 million the following week, when it was still 37 million the week of deconfinement.
