Since the start of the year, the company has recorded 398 cancellations of orders for 737 MAXs, grounded since March 2019 after two fatal accidents.

Boeing on Tuesday announced the cancellation in July of 43 additional orders for the 737 MAX, the American manufacturer's flagship aircraft grounded since March 2019, and the absence of new orders during the period.

In total, the aircraft manufacturer has received 398 cancellations of 737 MAX since the start of the year, according to a monthly report. The group, which resumed producing the devices in the spring after several months of shutdown, had already warned at the end of July that it anticipated a " slower than expected " increase in production rates by 2022. Banned from flying for two fatal accidents, the plane has however recently approached its return to the sky with a series of certification flights at the end of June. But the authorities have not yet given the green light and the group will not resume delivery at best until the fourth quarter.

Layoff plan

Boeing also delivered only four aircraft in July, two 787 Dreamliner to Air France-KLM and Turkish Airlines, as well as two cargo planes, against 19 in July 2019. However, it is at the time of delivery that the manufacturer collects most of the money for the order.

The fall in air transport since the start of the pandemic, which has plunged airline ticket purchases, has added to the woes of the 737 MAX. In addition to slowing production rates, Boeing has warned that it will have to lay off even more than the 16,000 job cuts announced in April.
