Apple announced last night that it is suspending the developer account of Epic Games from its app store. Epic Games is behind the popular online game Fortnite.

This means that Epic cannot upload new games or update existing games, such as Fortnite, in the Apple App Store. Customers who have the game installed on their mobile device can continue to play it, but they will not receive any new updates. In addition, players cannot make in-game purchases or play in the newly launched new season of Fortnite.

The battle between Apple and Epic Games began when Epic announced that gamers who play Fortnite on a smartphone will enjoy a 20% discount on all in-game purchases - as long as they pay directly to it and not Apple. This is how it actually bypassed the 30% commission that the tech giant takes from every purchase. In response, Apple removed the Fortnite app from its app store while Epic filed a lawsuit against it.

Apple has stated that it needs Epic to update Fortnite according to the app store terms of use within 14 days, otherwise it will suspend its developer account.

Another stage in the war between Apple and Afik

"We are disappointed that we had to close the Epic Games account. We have worked with the Epic Games team for many years during their distributions and launches," Apple said. "The court has recommended that Epic comply with app store guidelines while reviewing the case - guidelines it has been following for the past decade, until it has created this situation. Epic has refused. Instead, it publishes Fortnite updates that repeatedly violate app store guidelines. "It's not fair to the other developers and it puts customers in the middle of its struggle. We hope we can work again in the future, but unfortunately that is not possible now."

A spokesman for Epic Games referred CNBC to a statement posted on the company's blog following Apple's announcement. The statement said: "Apple requests that Epic return Fortnite for exclusive use of Apple's payment system. Its offer is an invitation for Epic to join Apple in maintaining its manipulation of payments, while suppressing free market competition and inflating prices. In principle, we will not participate in the course. This".
