Closure of Bridgestone in Béthune: have European subsidies been paid in Poland and Hungary?

VERIFICATION - With the help of the EU, "Bridgestone is investing 140 million in Poland, 190 million in Hungary and closes Béthune," criticized PCF MP Fabien Roussel on Thursday. Is it correct ?


THE QUESTION.

The Japanese company Bridgestone has decided to permanently close its plant in Béthune (Pas-de-Calais), which employs 863 people in the manufacture of tires for cars.

A decision that arouses the unanimous indignation of the executive and politicians.

Invited this Thursday morning on RTL, the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel, declared in particular:

“The Bridgestone group benefited from European Union subsidies to invest and develop its factories which it has in Poland and in Hungary in particular, where it has increased its production capacities there and has done almost nothing as an investment in Béthune (...) We have been warning for years by saying that aid from the European Union must not be used to finance unfair competition within the European Union and between Polish, Hungarian or French employees or workers ”.

The group itself organized the non-competitiveness of the Bridgestone site in Béthune
