The document from spring 2019, which EY's auditors sent to Wirecard's supervisory board, was written in the sober slang of accounting professionals - but it made it unmistakably clear that there were a lot of things going wrong in the group.

"In carrying out the audit of the consolidated financial statements, we identified the following facts or circumstances that represent or reveal violations of statutory provisions," says the non-public, extended audit report for 2018, which the Supervisory Board received in April 2019 and which SPIEGEL is available.

The document is also in the secret protection office of the Bundestag, reading it should make MPs sit up and take notice.

On five pages, the auditors summarize several "irregularities" that had already come to light at Wirecard: for example, a controversial company acquisition in India, which, among other things, dealt with possible "conflicts of interest of Wirecard management", alleged bogus bookings and an attempt to bribe a local Examiner went;

as well as private withdrawals and unauthorized bank transactions by an accountant of a Wirecard subsidiary in Austria.
