The software pioneer John McAfee was already under suspicion of murder. After his arrest in Spain, US authorities accuse him of another offense: tax evasion, including in connection with cryptocurrencies.

Software developer John McAfee faces a long prison sentence in the US for allegations of tax evasion and unfair advertising for cryptocurrencies.

Both the SEC and the Justice Department announced in Washington that they had brought charges against McAfee.

The 75-year-old was arrested in Spain and should be extradited to the United States.

The Justice Department plans to prosecute McAfee for tax evasion and willful failure to file tax returns.

The SEC accuses the pioneer of antivirus software, among other things, of having recommended certain digital currencies without disclosing that he received millions for it from the initiators.

In this context, McAfee's bodyguard was also charged.

According to the indictment, McAfee allegedly did not pay tax on "significant income" between 2014 and 2018.

During this period he was also active as a consultant, gave lectures and sold the rights to his life story for documentation, said the prosecutor in Tennessee.

If the entrepreneur with British-American roots is found guilty on all counts, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Adventurous escape through the jungle

A statement by McAfee was initially not available.

The tax offense charge dates back to June but has only just been made public.

McAfee founded the anti-virus software company named after him, McAfee, in the 1980s, from which he retired in the 1990s.

In 2012, McAfee made headlines around the world when he was searched for following the murder of his neighbor in Belize.

After an adventurous escape through the jungle, he returned to the USA and has meanwhile also registered as a candidate for the 2016 presidential election.

McAfee ran again this year, but ended its campaign again in March.
