Spot, the robot dog fighting the Covid-19

2020-10-06T17:33:17.913Z

The leader in military robotics is partnering with the French start-up Shark Robotics to market a decontamination robot dog.

In order to fight against Covid-19, robots are increasingly used, in particular to disinfect hospitals (waiting rooms, patient rooms), car parks, station platforms, shopping malls and others public places.

This, by not exposing humans to the virus.

Hence the decision of Boston Dynamics, American leader in military robotics and former MIT spin-off, to turn to a partner to give Spot, his robot dog, new missions.

Several examples of this robotic canine guard have been employed for several months by the State of Singapore, to ensure that walkers in public parks keep their distance.

The American company has found the rare pearl in France.

It has forged a partnership with Shark Robotics, a French start-up specializing in ground robots, created in 2016 by Jacques Topalian, robotics engineer and Cyril Kabbara, an elite former soldier.

The young shoot was illustrated with Colossus, its mobile firefighter robot, which participated in the fight against the fire of Notre-Dame in Paris.

Last April, Shark Robotics took its part in the fight against the epidemic, by urgently developing a remote decontamination robot.

The engineers of the start-up based in La Rochelle, in Charentes Maritimes, have grafted onto the Colossus platform, a disinfectant liquid microspray system for surfaces and a UV-C lamp air purification system, that kill pathogenic microorganisms in suspension.

This patented system has already been used successfully during the H1NI epidemic.

Decontamination of 20,000 M2 in 3 hours

The robot, called Rhyno Protect for decontamination (RPD), is remotely operated.

Equipped with four nozzles to spray 360 degrees and with a range of 2 meters around it, the 220 kilogram mobile robot is capable of decontaminating up to 20,000 m2 of surface in three hours.

It also purifies the air up to 100m3 per hour and kills 99% of germs in a single pass.

RPD, which is equipped with tracks, can clean up stairs and go through doors.

This robot was spotted by Boston Dynamics, which entrusted Shark Robotics with adapting its decontamination module, developed for RPD, to the Spot robot dog.

With the aim

of

providing a new robotic decontamination solution that is both autonomous, agile and very mobile

”.

Spot can indeed sneak into places inaccessible to RPD in order to decontaminate surfaces.

Controlled remotely or autonomously

The Spot anti-Covid-19 solution is now marketed by the French start-up.

"

With a complementary approach, Boston Dynamics and Shark Robotics provide an

efficient and highly mobile decontamination

solution

capable of combating COVID-19 in all types of environments

", underlines Cyril Kabbara.

Once in the field, Spot is able to decontaminate up to 2,000 m2 in 15 minutes, in any space requiring sanitation, from schools to hotels to hospitals and company offices.

It can be used in conjunction with the RPD robot, in remote control or autonomously.

Spot can navigate complex indoor environments with steps, uneven floors, and avoid obstacles,

” says Shark Robotics.
