Was that the turnaround in traffic?

At the beginning of the corona pandemic, many Germans left their cars. But the car's comeback came unexpectedly quickly. Bus and rail are now the big losers of the crisis. What does this mean for the cities?

When Irina Mazilu-Eyaz talks about her daily journeys, her sentences often begin with the word "actually".

"It's actually pretty practical to take the S-Bahn," says the 44-year-old from Stuttgart.

In 30 minutes she will be at her place of work at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

She is not stuck in traffic and can read.

"It takes me 40 minutes by car because there is always traffic jam."

She even has a job ticket from her employer.

And, yes, "actually" she wants to protect the environment.

"Actually, I'd like to ride my bike," she says.

But when spring began, her electric bike broke.

Then Corona came, and now nothing is like it used to be.

Demand and reality, reason and unreason - nowhere in everyday life do they collide as much as in mobility.

Mazilu-Eyaz mostly works in the home office.

And when she has to go to the office, she takes the car. "I noticed that it's great when you have a car."

Always available and free from foreign viruses.

She avoids local public transport (ÖPNV).

"There's a certain risk of being infected on the train."
