Many food producers obviously want to participate in the Nutri-Score nutritional traffic light.

56 companies had already registered for the new label at the beginning of October, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, according to "Tagesspiegel".

The introduction of the Nutri-Score, which is supposed to provide information about the nutritional value of foods, was decided in October.

The five-level color and letter combination of the nutritional value traffic light, which is printed on the packaging, ranges from a green A to a red E. It should also enable consumers to compare different products within a product group.

The evaluation is unfavorable if there are too many fats, sugar or salt in a food.

For manufacturers, however, participation is voluntary.

The regulation for the introduction of the Nutri-Score will soon come into force when it is announced.

According to "Tagesspiegel", the food company Nestlé has already switched 170 of its products to Nutri-Score labeling.

By the end of 2021, all products should be marked with the new label, said a company spokesman for the "Tagesspiegel".

The managing director of the German Diabetes Society, Barbara Bitzer, welcomed the introduction of the Nutri-Score, but called for further steps.

Ideally, the new nutrition labeling should not only be voluntary, but compulsory, Bitzer told the "Tagesspiegel".

In addition, "further health policy steps are necessary in order to implement healthy nutrition across the board".

As examples, Bitzer cited a ban on advertising aimed at children for unhealthy products and taxation of unhealthy products such as soft drinks.

The managing director referred to recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).
