Good news for restaurant owners: restaurateurs do not have to offset the out-of-home sales of food and drinks against the government aid they receive because of the November shutdown.

This provides for an agreement between the Federal Finance and Economics Ministry, from which the Reuters news agency quotes.

Gastronomy such as restaurants, bars and pubs must be closed for the rest of the month from November 2nd.

The federal and state governments had previously agreed that companies should receive up to 75 percent of their November sales in the previous year as a reimbursement for losses due to the corona restrictions.

In view of the corona crisis, the credit agency Crif Bürgel warns of a wave of bankruptcies in the catering trade.

According to an analysis, more than 8,300 restaurants, pubs, snack bars and cafes in Germany are at risk of bankruptcy by the end of October.

According to estimates by the economist Friedrich Schneider from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, undeclared work in the hotel and catering industry is likely to increase by around ten percent this year.

He estimates their total volume at 60.7 billion euros.

Growing unemployment, the rise in short-time work and falling incomes mean that more dishwashers, cleaners and temporary cooks are looking for jobs, writes Schneider.

Many of them don't want to earn too much on paper in order not to endanger their unemployment or housing benefits.

At the same time, the crisis is tempting more landlords to employ black workers.
