Kersten Reinnicke completed his training this October - at the age of 51.
Now he is a geriatric nurse and says that is his dream job: “There is this gratitude that you get back from the elderly.
When you go out and someone smiles goodbye, that's worth a lot more than anything else. "
In the same month, the Federal Statistical Office published figures on nursing training, and they were sensational: around 71,300 people decided in 2019 to learn a nursing profession.
An increase of 8.2 percent compared to the previous year, in a ten-year comparison even an increase of 39 percent.
But how can that be?
For years now, you have only heard the word “shortage” when it comes to nursing workers.
Gabriele Staude, Reinnicke's boss, also speaks of this.
The 2,000 theory hours that were part of his training cost her around 20,000 euros: "I'm happy about every specialist!"

Vocational training: More people are starting care training
The care sector is a huge job market.
1.7 million nursing staff are employed in Germany subject to social security contributions, 1.1 million of them work in nursing.
Sounds like a lot, but not even half of them work full-time.
If you add up the working hours of nurses who have a part-time job or who are marginally employed, this results in a full-time equivalent of 1.3 million positions in nursing - 800,000 positions are accounted for in nursing and 500,000 in care for the elderly.
The Federal Employment Agency collected this data for 2019.
