Coronavirus: Why Lidl and Aldi pay vaccination premiums in the USA

Anyone who refuses to be vaccinated against Covid-19 can lose their job in America. But companies still prefer to take a different approach: They offer employees bonuses.

A new race has broken out among America's companies: Who will get the vaccine for their employees first?

"Dear President Biden," wrote the Amazon top manager Dave Clark to the new incumbent, combining his congratulations on the inauguration with an apparently unselfish offer: Amazon, Clark suggested, could help Biden implement his promise to 100 million Americans within 100 Days to vaccinate.

Clark's idea: The company's 800,000 employees should "receive the Covid-19 vaccination at the earliest possible appropriate time."

Like the online giant, dozens of companies and industry associations have approached government agencies in the past few weeks to prioritize their employees, including the Uber car service and the food delivery company DoorDash.

But while some are putting pressure on to get the scarce material, others are already worried about the next: Are the employees even willing to be vaccinated?

And if not, how do you get them to do it?

Better with the carrot or with the stick?
