Brexit has further consequences for the flow of goods to Northern Ireland: The online mail order company Amazon has stopped selling wines, beers and spirits in Northern Ireland.

Amazon confirmed this to SPIEGEL after the British TV broadcaster ITV first reported on it.

In addition, the company is preparing to remove more products from the list due to the new Brexit customs rules.

The online retailer is concerned that excise duty will now have to be paid twice on shipments of alcohol sent from the UK mainland via the Irish Sea to Northern Ireland, ITV reported.

The UK left the European Union's internal market and customs union on December 31st, bringing with it paperwork and customs declarations for companies importing and exporting goods using the pad.

Northern Ireland belongs to the British customs area, but de facto has to continue to follow the rules of the EU internal market and the customs union - this is the only way to prevent a hard border with the Republic of Ireland.

As a result, there have been repeated obstacles in the movement of goods to Northern Ireland since the beginning of the year.

The UK government said the vast majority of packages continue to move smoothly and there is no reason for companies not to send goods to Northern Ireland.

"These goods are not double taxed and we will issue new guidance clarifying the position to ensure any remaining issues are resolved," said a government spokesman.
