The criticism of Clubhouse is huge.

Not enough that established politicians like Thuringia's Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow lose their form there.

Security experts warn that users can be read and data can be hijacked.

German consumer advocates recently warned the new audio app because of "serious defects".

The Federal Government Commissioner for Digitization, Dorothee Bär, is obviously more relaxed about the whole thing.

"Of course, the clubhouse must also act in accordance with the statutory provisions, be it in terms of data protection or with regard to hatred and agitation on the Internet," said the State Minister in the Federal Chancellery and CSU politician to the "Handelsblatt".

"But I would think it would be wrong to smash every digital innovation with the data protection club right from the start - especially if there is still no agreement among lawyers as to how the app should be finally assessed in terms of data protection law."

Users could deny access to data

Clubhouse is a social media app from the USA in which users can take part in panel discussions.

Recently, Clubhouse was particularly criticized for the fact that the app asks for access to users' contacts.

This should enable users to find friends faster with the app.

However, you can refuse access to the address book when registering.

Bär said: "As with all innovations, such a new format not only harbors opportunities, but also risks." However, every user can "of course also decide to deny access to their contacts and to allow other people to be invited." dispense".

On Wednesday, Bär and Chancellor Helge Braun (CDU) asked Clubhouse questions about the federal government's new digital strategy.

Bär defended the use of the app for this purpose and called for more courage when trying out new communication channels: "I notice that we rarely give innovations a chance."

In the »Handelsblatt«, Bär praised the audio app's »participation function«, with which you can exchange ideas virtually in times of lockdown, but still »in good company«.

Clubhouse also offers politics a chance to get together with people and to conduct “spontaneous, informal debates” from anywhere and at any time.

"Such discussions are particularly exciting when people with a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds come together," said the Minister of State.
