Nature, coronavirus was not born in the laboratory, natural origin

The SarsCoV2 virus was born in nature and not in the laboratory through the manipulation of coronaviruses similar to that of Sars. This is the conclusion reached by a study published in Nature Medicine by an international research group led by the Californian Scripps Research Institute.

The results thus seem to indirectly respond also to the controversies born in the last hours of an old service of the Tg Leonardo who in 2015 spoke of a dangerous supervirus created in China.

"In the midst of the global health emergency since Covid-19, it is reasonable to wonder why knowing the origin of the pandemic is important," the researchers write. "Understanding in detail how an animal virus has made the leap to infect humans so effectively will help us prevent similar future events."

In light of the genetic characteristics of the SarsCoV2 virus, "we do not believe that any scenario that traces its birth to the laboratory is plausible". To demonstrate incontrovertibly the natural origin of the virus it will be necessary to "obtain viral sequences related from animal sources". Identifying a potential intermediate host, as well as sequencing the virus from the earliest cases of contagion, can be just as useful.
