A 19th century sculpture of a granite bowl has been covered in graffiti. At the beginning of the month, more than 70 works had been vandalized in the German capital.

The series of degradations continues on Berlin's Museum Island.

On the night of October 23-24, a sculpture located in front of the Altes Museum was tagged.

"

A group of young adults and teenagers damaged the

work

last night,

" city police said in a statement, adding that there was "

no known connection at the moment

" with the acts of vandalism on October 3, the day of the celebration of German reunification.

The degraded sculpture represents an imposing granite bowl dating from the 19th century.

It was covered in graffiti, some referring to a city football team, Herta Berlin, or Berlin rapper Ufo 361, reports an AFP journalist.

None of these inscriptions has "

political significance

," said the authorities, who claimed to have arrested "

two young people aged 17 and 21

".

This degradation comes three days after the revelation by the weekly

Die Zeit

of cases of vandalism of several dozen works of art in three buildings on Museum Island, in the heart of the German capital.

The authors sprinkled an “

oily substance

” on the works, including Egyptian sculptures and sarcophagi, as well as paintings from the 19th century.

Berlin's Museum Island, located between two arms of the Spree, the river in the heart of the capital, notably hosts the legendary bust of Nefertiti and the great Pergamon altar, an ancient religious monument.

The site brings together five museums presenting collections of paintings and sculptures dating from antiquity to the beginnings of modern art.

The complex, popular with tourists, was listed in 1999.
