Syria's permanent delegate to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, renewed Syria's demand to put a final and unconditional end to the unilateral economic coercive measures imposed by some countries, especially in light of the spread of the Corona virus, stressing that facing this epidemic requires global collective solidarity.
During a virtual meeting held by the United Nations General Assembly today to discuss the various initiatives and draft resolutions that are being presented to the General Assembly in the context of enhancing the role and mission of the international system to address the emerging Corona Virus pandemic, Al-Jaafari said in a statement that all member states today agree in theory that facing the Corona epidemic requires Global collective solidarity, but recent disputes within the General Assembly over the contents of draft resolutions have proven that the actions and policies of some do not always coincide with obligations and words.
Al-Jaafari stressed that the primary concern of Syria today is to reach credible and balanced results between the various initiatives that are presented to the General Assembly to achieve the optimal response in the face of Coved 19 and in a manner consistent with the calls, reports and appeals issued by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and all of which emphasized that global solidarity Faced with this epidemic, it cannot be achieved as long as the capabilities of some countries remain constrained by unilateral economic terms, procedures and sanctions.
Al-Jaafari pointed out that Syria joined the consensus on the first two resolutions issued by the General Assembly to confront Coved 19 based on a mutual understanding among member states that the General Assembly will deal in the near future with various issues, details and procedures necessary to ensure global collective solidarity in facing this emergency health situation and in The foremost among them is the negative effects of unilateral coercive measures on the ability of some countries and their peoples to cope with the effects of this epidemic without restrictions or discrimination.
Al-Jaafari mentioned many recent official correspondence between the countries affected by these illegal measures and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the last of which was the response letter sent by Antonio Guterres to Syria and reiterated his principled position in rejecting these illegal economic sanctions and asserting that he is exerting his endeavors with the governments that Such measures are imposed on the Syrian people and on other peoples in the world, which number about two billion people, in order to reduce or consider lifting these sanctions.
Syria's permanent delegate to the United Nations criticized the refusal of the sponsors of some draft resolutions to the General Assembly to deal positively and flexibly with the proposals submitted by Syria and a large number of member states of the United Nations in order to include General Assembly resolutions as paragraphs that address the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the national capacities of countries Affected and on collective global solidarity in responding to Covid 19.
Al-Jaafari stressed the need for the United Nations to move in a direction that leads to consensus, but in parallel with achieving global solidarity in the face of this global pandemic, and revealed that the permanent Syrian delegation recently addressed the issuance of some decisions on the General Assembly after the sponsors of these decisions responded to Western pressure, particularly the American pressure. They refused to include any language dealing with the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures and the role required by international financial institutions in supporting countries in vulnerable situations due to sanctions and the economic blockade.
Al-Jaafari reaffirmed Syria's commitment to the Charter and the procedural rules that govern the work of the United Nations while remaining loyal to its national interests and the right of the Syrian people and aspirations with many peoples of the world to put an end to coercive and unilateral economic sanctions.
He said: We will continue to adhere to our inalienable rights protected by international law, the Charter, relevant General Assembly resolutions and calls of the Secretary-General to put a final and unconditional end to these unilateral coercive economic measures, indicating in this context to Syria's demand for free access to world trade and the global banking system so that we can From securing the needs of the people
Syria and overcoming the economic, social and health effects of this epidemic, stressing that this freedom is a well-established right of all peoples of the world and not from anyone.
Al-Jaafari also stressed Syria's aspiration for a comprehensive and one resolution issued by the General Assembly emphasizing the central and leading role of the United Nations and its specialized organizations, especially the World Health Organization, in tackling this epidemic and its ultimate elimination, and in ensuring stable and sustainable financing for this global mission, stressing that this time is For solidarity and action, not for political confrontations and rhetoric, nor for imposing sanctions on peoples and the United Nations for the sake of registering political victories or serving electoral fights.
