Atletico pick and shovel to beat a Celta without a goal

2020-10-18T03:28:01.011Z

A bit early by Suárez puts the victory on track for the colchoneros and shows the potential of his alchemy with Diego Costa, who ended up injured

It is not risky to imagine Simeone with clenched fists, uncomfortable during the league break that came after two games with a scoreless draw, two appointments in which his team barely threw twice between sticks.

Atlético needed to take off that backpack, shout to everyone that it is a solvent team with offensive resources and do it as, sometimes, it takes things, forceful and unleashed.

That was Atlético that built its victory (0-2) in Balaídos with a fierce start to the game, but also well played.

Once the advantage was achieved and the Celta activated, the duel demanded pick and shovel for the mattresses.

Almost everything in football is defined by the scoreboard, but Simeone also received some more good news: Torreira showed up with stripes and generosity in the effort, Lemar approached what was demanded of him for a long time and Diego Costa and Luis Suárez outlined a resounding mix until the Hispanic-Brazilian was injured, the only bad news for Atlético in Vigo.

Everything that happened hurt Celta, who arrived after three days without winning and now has a trio of consecutive defeats in which they did not see the door.

The team trained by Óscar García Junyent, who wanted to shield themselves with three centrals against the brave pair of battering rams from Cholo, entered the game badly.

Just as it is running, in need of the contribution of homegrown players (two footballers from the subsidiary lined up at the beginning, two more left later) and eager to evolve from a classification that gives them peace, Celta ran into their limitations.

But neither did he leave the game.

He struggled against a bossy rival in which Koke, his back covered by Torreira, took command of operations.

The Atlético captain played on the inside until in the final quarter hour Simeone ended up folding.

His team shone as Koke flowed.

Because Atlético was more when he circulated the ball.

He did it with agility and thus reached the goal.

Five minutes later he scored after Koke had established his foundations and Diego Costa was lit up with a monumental movement with his back turned to goal.

Manu Sánchez struck to step on the area and Suárez did not need even a control to finish off the net.

The action portrayed the potential of alchemy between Costa and Suárez.

Atlético felt vigorous, Celta dwarfed with the ball and long without it.

Vulnerable.

But he knew how to turn around and turn the tables.

He found Aspas and with him they flew from the lanes Olaza and the new Carreira.

Atlético took several steps back.

Suddenly, he entrenched himself, pushed by a rival who knew how to put pieces in a finishing position at each arrival.

But that did not end.

The two full-backs threaded the first warning, a cross from Olaza from the baseline and a shot from Carreira to the post.

He arrived with all Celta.

Aspas and Nolito also pointed out, who had to fight in defense, but had the breath to filter a goal pass to Santi Mina, who saw it all yellow against Oblak.

The Slovenian goalkeeper also denied a shot from the central Fontán.

The celestial display deserved a prize for football, insistence and exposure.

He varied in drawing and men Óscar and Atlético barely pressed him in a gallop by Costa that ended in a shot by Suárez and a muscular injury to his partner.

The afternoon slipped ungratefully for the Madrid team, but once again Celta lacked a more decisive profile up front.

What Atlético showed to win the game was what Celta lacked, where after six days only Iago Aspas has scored a goal.

And, in case he had forgotten, Joao Felix reminded him on the last play of the game with a left-footed shot that crashed into the crossbar and that Carrasco pushed into the net.

Simeone: "In Munich we will seek solutions to the problems we suffer today"

Simeone's 200th triumph on the Atlético bench came with a strike, Diego Costa's injury, a muscle ailment in the thigh of his left leg that will almost certainly take him away from the Champions League match against Bayern, which awaits this Wednesday to the mattress makers in Munich.

"It is a setback because we are going to face the best team in the world, by intensity, by pressure, by game, for everything it shows," explained Simeone, who hopes that the team will correct the weaknesses it showed in the first half of the match against the Celtic.

"It is a very important game for us and we will humbly seek solutions to what we had to suffer in the first half today," said Cholo.

"The important thing was to win," said the striker Luis Suárez, who felt comfortable in the company of Diego Costa for the first time.

“We all know that he is a very important footballer due to his career and the years he has been with the team.

We have to adapt, but I have been very comfortable playing with him, ”said the Uruguayan forward.

More self-critical was the Argentine coach.

Simeone did not like that Celta generated so many goal options, especially in the minutes before the break.

“In the second half we corrected and we were stronger as a block.

The situations that Celta had in the first half were not the same.

We expect a counterattack and close the game.

The one to zero was tight, difficult and hard, but luckily the second goal appeared at the end ”.

In that rescue the Uruguayan Lucas Torreira contributed, who made his debut with Atlético and whom Simeone saw in a good tone.

“He is a very hardworking boy who competes very well.

When he picks up the rhythm of the game he will give us a lot in the center of the field, more speed in that part of the field ”.

The former Arsenal player ended up stiff, cramped and still vigorous on the pitch.

Simeone defines him: “It had been a long time since he played, but from the first day he showed us his characteristics.

He's a guy who's going to give us absolutely everything ”.
