The police prefecture's ban on the rally did not discourage the demonstrators. Tuesday evening, at least 20,000 people gathered in front of the Paris courthouse against police violence at the call of the support committee for the family of Adama Traoré, who died in 2016 after his arrest by gendarmes.

Another name that often came up during the evening was that of George Floyd, a black man killed during his arrest by white police in the United States and whose death has been causing a social earthquake on the other side of Atlantic.

The rally took place in peace until about 9 p.m. before incidents broke out between the police and demonstrators, shots from LBD and tear gas responding to projectile jets. Several hundred people notably blocked cars on the ring road.
