Deconfinement: what the web data teaches us about the movements of the French this weekend

INFOGRAPHICS - Several datasets show that the French have increased their trips this weekend. Without reaching the levels observed during the deconfinement last May.

A few weeks before Christmas, to say that the return of traders was eagerly awaited is an understatement.

And the first data transmitted by various sources confirm it: reopening of places of worship, possibility of moving further afield, resumption of shops ... The French wereted no time in taking advantage of the relaxation of health restrictions, as of Saturday.

Several particularly reactive datasets make it possible to see, overnight, a leap in the movements of the French.

First, Citymapper recorded a jump in the trips planned in its application, designed above all for trips by "

public transport [...] on foot, by bicycle, by micromobility and by taxi

".

Compared to a typical period established between January 6 and February 2 for Lyon and February 3 and March 1 for Paris, demand jumped from 28% of normal for these two cities during the week ending. November 22 at 43% and 41% for the capital and the city of the southeast, Saturday.

The rates then fell to 38% and 34% respectively, remaining above those recorded during the second confinement - themselves already largely higher than the activity observed during the first confinement.

Likewise, an immediate increase in mobility was noted by Apple.

The American giant regularly publishes a data file establishing the percentage of route requests in its Maps application, compared to a benchmark established on January 13, 2020. “

In many countries / regions, sub-regions and cities, the relative volume has increased since January 13, which corresponds to normal seasonal use of Apple's Plans

, ”the group notes.

Across France, requests increased from Friday to Saturday, going from 65% to 71% for trips by transport and from 49% to 61% for those on foot.

Conversely, those in cars fell slightly, from 70% to 67%.

The use of motorized vehicles visibly suffers from the maintenance of the 20km restriction.

Apple data also highlights how this second confinement was less restrictive than the first in terms of travel.

It should also be noted that the rate has been gradually rising since October 30, according to a gradual return to the normal already observed during the first confinement.

These changes are also visible at the local level, again thanks to data from Apple.

The Bordelais, Lille, Lyonnais, Marseillais and Parisiens, for example, took advantage of the relaxation to move much more on foot on Saturday: in these metropolises, the rates jumped respectively by 20, 17, 13, 2 and 15 percentage points.

An increase can also be seen in Nantes, Rouen and Toulouse.

In these different cities, the car was used less this weekend, unlike travel on foot or by public transport, which is preferred on Saturdays.

At the local level, always, Paris also saw the number of bicycles increase strongly this weekend.

According to data collected by the terminals distributed in the capital, 141,000 bicycles were counted on Saturday and 86,000 on Sunday.

Saturday's figures allow the number of bikes to reach a level not observed since October 29, before the start of the second lockdown.

Also, on Sunday the number is lower than the rest of the week, a normal trend, but it remains significantly higher - nearly double - than the Sunday average since the end of October, around 43,000 bikes at most.

A record that remains mixed for businesses

The French therefore got back into motion this weekend, thanks to the reduction in containment measures.

However, the increase is far from the jump recorded overnight after the end of the first containment, on May 11.

No surprises here: a number of measures remain relevant, activities such as restaurants, bars, museums and cinemas are still closed and the travel certificate remains in force.

In addition, the extent of the rebound was mitigated by a very particular recovery weekend for traders: the postponement of Black Friday as well as the sometimes violent demonstrations were able to dissuade some customers, who prefer to wait until next week to get out. run in their Christmas shopping.

The first reports collected by the specialized federation Procos underline a mixed results:

"in the city centers, we record decreases in activity of 25% to 30% compared to last year

", explained to

Figaro

the general delegate of the organization, Emmanuel Le Roch.

Conversely, large retailers and shopping centers recorded better results.

Remember that professionals started from afar: the data collected by Google on the mobility of French people, broken down by type of trip, show that trips to “

places such as restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, theme parks, museums, libraries and cinemas

”collapsed.

On Tuesday, November 24, requests for trips to places of commerce and leisure had collapsed by 57% in Île-de-France, 75% in Paris and 49% in France as a whole.

A variation calculated from a reference value defined as the median of Tuesdays between January 3 and February 6, 2020.

Google's next dataset, which should include the reopening of businesses, should logically be published on Tuesday.

This article will be updated with the latest data available, to see if the rebound observed on Saturday is confirmed, and if it is gaining momentum over the days.
