Summary: The best performance of Diego Armando Maradona (Sport 1)

In 2005 Diego Maradona interviewed himself.

It was perhaps the calmest and most sane period of his life, if you can put it that way.

It was after he managed to recover from heart problems that nearly caused his death, recovered from cocaine addiction after more than two decades of frequent use, and also underwent gastric bypass surgery to treat his life-threatening obesity.

It was the right moment to look at his life with a sober look and take stock.

And Maradona did so admirably.

In the months in question he was the host of a TV show and interviewed many celebrities - and one evening he spoke to himself.

On the one hand, sat the tailored Diego, dressed in a suit - he was the poignant interviewer who was not afraid to ask tough questions.

Opposite him sat Diego in a simple shirt - that is, the real Diego.

He answered the questions honestly, and agreed to be exposed to the nation in front of the cameras.

Maybe the goal was to rake in a record rating, but the result was more important.

"what are you sorry about?"

Diego wondered at Diego.

"For not enjoying my daughters' childhood, and for missing their parties. For causing suffering to my mother, my father, my siblings, and everyone who loves me. For not being able to reach their full potential on the field because of cocaine," Diego replied to Diego.

In a moment of seriousness, he knew how to put his finger on the problems and look at himself in the mirror without fear.

"What would you say to yourself at your funeral?"

Diego asked Diego.

"Thank you for playing football, because that's what gave me joy and gave me freedom. It's like about heaven in my hands. Thank you for the ball. Yes, that's what I would write about my tombstone - thank you for the ball," Diego replied to Diego.

So he wrote his obituary 15 years before his death, and he designed his tombstone himself.

And he did it best of all, of course.

He had to say thank you to the ball because he defined Diego and made him what he is.

And the ball should also say thank you to Maradona for what he was, because without him football would have been much poorer.

Together, they were the perfect duo.

However, when looking at the story of the genius' life and complex figure, so full of amazing contrasts, one can not ignore the question - did the fame he gained due to his phenomenal skills not only give him happiness and freedom, but also hurt him humanly, greatly intensifying the suffering he and his family suffered?

Infinite innocence.

Look at the pictures of Diego Maradona the boy, in the uniform of Argentinos Juniors in the late 70's, and you will see infinite innocence.

He grew up in poverty in the violent neighborhood of Via Purito in southern Buenos Aires, almost drowned as a child in a pit full of feces, his mother could not afford to attend family meals to leave enough food for her children, and many of his friends degenerated into crime, but can be seen with kindness and joy.

This was the period when football gave him pure pleasure, with no side effects.

Look at his pictures down the road - and innocence was no longer there.

From countless showcase games that exhausted him at Boca Juniors to enrich the club's coffers, during his tenure in Barcelona he had to deal - not always successfully - with attempts to injure and eliminate him on the pitch on a weekly basis, through the extensive ties with the Mafia that funded his arrival in Naples ... All this was no longer really innocent.

Life forged it and spoiled it at the same time.

And as it soared to heights, so too did it descend into the abyss, at the same time.

As the wondrous legend was built, his soul was utterly destroyed.

He became a myth, thus inspiring millions around the world, but not himself.

Life forged it and spoiled it at the same time.

Yes, he was God for the Argentine people, had he brought the World Cup to the most amazing personal tournament in history.

No one has risen as high as Maradona who carried on his back a rather mediocre team to lift the World Cup with insane performances, breathtaking goals and ingenious cooking.

Yes, he will be God forever and ever in Naples, to which he has given two Italian championships, thanks to which the inhabitants of the poor south felt that they had shown the rich north where the fish urinated from.

But along the way, he helped a lot to the mafia that hurts most of all in the southern Italian.

It is easy to portray him as a hero who came from poverty to restore pride to the oppressed, but his support for Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez gave impetus to lowly dictators who harmed their people, and his rare status in Argentina also gave legitimacy to a completely abnormal lifestyle.

In Argentina it is common to say that the historic minutes at the beginning of the second half of the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England define Maradona's contrasts more than anything - he was also the great liar when he scored, and also immediately scored one of the biggest goals in the history of the game.

I wish it was so.

I wish his deepest depression was the cunning action against Peter Shelton, about which he mischievously said after the final whistle that it was "the hand of God."

It was fine, easy and material in the political circumstances, in the shadow of the war on the Falkland Islands.

In fact, it was not Diego's only touch of the World Cup.

Four years later, he held a critical ball in his hand on his goal line in a game against the Soviet Union, and this helped Albiceleste win, survive the home stage and eventually even reach the final.

That's fine too.

A much bigger problem was that Maradona did not respect any laws at all.

He brought other people's urine for drug tests so as not to get caught on cocaine.

The use of hard drugs has become more legitimate because of it.

This should also include domestic violence, shooting at journalists and tax offenses.

His influence was enormous, and he could have exploited it to substantially improve the lives of Argentines.

Many footballers recounted how Diego's few words influenced them and instilled in them faith, confidence and motivation.

Even Mauro Camoranzi, who was a citizen of Italy, spoke in a trembling voice to Diego before the 2006 World Cup final, and knew after the call was over that the Squadra Azura would lift the trophy.

If he wanted to, if he could - he would have had the power of Maradona to bring about a certain positive change for his country, and even for the whole world.

It did not happen.

Having already been on his deathbed, but coming back to life while overcoming drugs and health issues, could have been the big turning point.

The program in which he interviewed himself could have been part of the dramatic change of consciousness.

Three years later, he was even named the national coach in a controversial move, leading the team to the World Cup in South Africa.

However, everything soon crashed, and Maradona eventually became a sad parody of himself.

As the years went by, it became harder for him to be whole with himself.

His last years were not happy at all.

Even when he worked as a coach, the ball no longer made him happy and did not give him freedom.

"He no longer wanted to be Maradona."

Diego Maradona (Photo: Reuters)

"The mind faded following the body. He no longer wanted to be Maradona, and could not be a normal person. Nothing motivated him anymore. Antidepressants and sleeping pills stopped working. He lost the game," the editorial in the leading Argentine newspaper Clarin said.

Not many believed at the time that he would reach the age of 60. Perhaps Maradona himself did not believe either.

Last month's birthday was almost irrelevant to him.

Now their suffering is over, and only the legend will remain forever.

And perhaps now that Maradona is no longer with us, it will be possible to concentrate only on his positive legacy.

In the ingenious moves, in the insane goals, in the wondrous stationary balls, in the smiles, in the endless happiness he brought to Argentina and Naples.

In short, remember only what he did with the ball.

"Thanks for the ball," should be written on his tombstone.

He said this 15 years ago, but it can also be defined as his last wish.
