Hardly anyone goes to amusement parks in Corona times - with severe consequences for the entertainment company Walt Disney.

The group has announced that it will lay off 32,000 employees.

The US company announced on Thursday that employees in the theme parks are particularly affected.

That is around 14 percent of the around 223,000 employees who were still working for the US group at the end of 2019.

In September the company had spoken of 28,000 layoffs.

Only a fraction of the visitors are allowed in

The layoffs should take place in the first half of 2021, the company said.

Disney has posted high losses since the crisis broke out.

Although the group can now operate some amusement parks again, it has to strictly control the flow of visitors and thus only achieves a fraction of the possible capacity.

A company spokeswoman confirmed to the industry magazine Variety that the 32,000 layoffs are an increase in the original plans.

Walt Disney operates amusement parks, produces films and offers television channels.

Most recently, only its own streaming service Disney + provided positive news.
