Behind the femicide statistics are the stories of women and girls who are murdered daily for gender reasons in Argentina. With the aim of giving this harsh reality a human dimension , which the coldness of the numbers sometimes hides, from the Spotlight Initiative, an alliance of the European Union and the United Nations, thanks to the support of the Clarín Group , we published the obituaries of the victims of femicides, transvestites and transfemicides in the last year in the country.

In the last year alone, there were more than 300 victims of femicides, transvestites and transfemicides in Argentina. It is estimated that in recent weeks and in the context of preventive and compulsory isolation, the situation remained the same or even, according to various surveys of civil society organizations, worsened. The survey, carried out by the organization La Casa del Encuentro, corresponds to the period from May 1, 2019 to May 1, 2020. An equally painful statistic is that from these femicides at least 366 daughters and sons remained motherless last year. 66% of them are minors.

The publication, in the Obituaries section of the edition of the Clarín newspaper on Wednesday June 3, coincides with the fifth anniversary of the first march of Ni Una Menos, which achieved a massive reaction throughout the country against gender violence and its most extreme manifestation: femicides.

There they are and their stories . Sandra P. stabbed and beaten to death on September 1, 2019 in the city of Salta; Silvia G. murdered and charred at her home on August 10, 2019 in the city of Buenos Aires; María A. was beaten to the face and head on August 12, 2019 in the city of Rosario. Unfortunately the list goes on.

This Gender Obituaries campaign was carried out for the first time in 2018 by the UN Women office in Uruguay together with the agency Amen.

“In 2018 we promoted the formation of the Alliance against Femicide, an initiative aligned with the European Union's foreign policy for the elimination of gender violence in the world. In 2019 we launched the Spotlight Initiative with the great ambition of eradicating femicide in the country . Argentina was one of the 5 selected countries in Latin America given the commitment of civil society and the State to the subject. We are aware that this commitment is a great achievement of the cry Ni Una Menos that resonated throughout the country in 2015 ”, highlights the Ambassador of the European Union in Argentina, Aude Maio-Coliche.

For his part, Roberto Valent, Coordinator of the United Nations in Argentina, assures that “ from the Spotlight Initiative we pay tribute to those stories that challenge us and compel us to reflect and join the request for #BastaDeFemicidios. We believe that this type of action contributes to making the problem visible and promoting reflection aimed at generating transformations and cultural changes that allow ending gender-based violence. ”

" In Clarín we have been focusing on the creation of content with a gender perspective, we carried out training on these topics for our journalists and, in 2019 we were the first Argentine media to appoint a gender editor to ratify and deepen that commitment," says Ricardo Kirschbaum , general editor of Clarín .

"Since 2017, the main media of the Group adhered to the " Media Pact, let's take a step for the equality of UN Women . " We seek to contribute to raising awareness of the need to eradicate inequalities between men and women in society ”, explains Martín Etchevers, Grupo Clarín communications manager .

“With this campaign we seek to continue putting gender-based violence on the agenda. Beyond our daily work of informing, we are committed to being part of the cultural change to achieve a more just society , free of violence, ”adds Nicole Insignares, head of sustainability at Grupo Clarín .
