Paris pop-up cycle paths should remain

2020-09-16T12:52:50.589Z

In Berlin, the pop-up cycle paths built during the corona crisis may have to be dismantled, in Paris they are now being set up permanently. The reason for this is the sharp increase in bicycle traffic.

Paris is sticking to its pop-up bike paths set up during the corona crisis.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo told the broadcaster Europe 1 that around 50 kilometers of roads would be permanently rededicated.

"In Paris, the bicycle has become a means of transport to get to work," said Hildalgo.

"It also helps to reduce pollution."

Among other things, the central traffic axis Rue de Rivoli at the Louvre was converted into a bicycle expressway.

Because of the strikes in local public transport at the beginning of the year and the corona crisis, cycling in Paris rose by 67 percent within a year, and in all of France it was 29 percent.

The socialist Hidalgo, recently confirmed in office with the help of the Greens, and her predecessor had previously closed both streets on the Seine to cars and opened them to pedestrians and cyclists.

In its Corona aid package, the French government provides around 200 million euros for the expansion of cycle paths and bicycle parking spaces at train stations.

In addition, the French can currently claim state premiums of 50 euros for repairs and 200 euros for the purchase of an electric bike.

In the Paris region, the subsidy for an e-bike is even 500 euros.
