Police unionist Rainer Wendt: Strictly conservative course
Photo: Martin Schutt / DPAWhen Rainer Wendt joins the political debate almost every day via Facebook, smoke billows from the keyboard. The head of the German Police Union (DPolG) likes simple words and clear fronts. "Left and Greens," he wrote recently, "are consistently pursuing their strategy of rushing against the police and all security agencies until their ability to act is finally undone."
Here the police, neglected and demotivated. Politics there, left and blind. This is how Wendt sees the world. The 63-year-old made it a bestselling author in 2016 with the book "Germany in Danger". He castigates "cuddle justice" and "fun education" in it. The state is too open, too lax, too liberal.
Affair survived
Ironically, Wendt himself benefited from sloppiness and companionship: for years he earned a salary as a police officer in North Rhine-Westphalia, although he worked full-time for his union. In addition, there were lush additional earnings that he did not report to his employer. But Wendt survived the affair at the head of the union. Since then it seems to have gotten louder again on social media, perhaps more shrill.
