Actor Robert Redford seeks close contact with his family after his son's cancer death.
A spokeswoman for the Hollywood star told People magazine that the 84-year-old asked for privacy.
"The grief over the loss of one's own child is immeasurable," she is quoted as saying.
James was a loving son, husband and father.
58-year-old James Redford died of biliary tract cancer a few days ago at the age of only 58.
It is the second loss of a child for Robert Redford and his ex-wife Lola Van Wagenen.
Scott, the first child of the two, had died as a toddler in 1959, only a few months old.
The couple, who were married until 1985, still have daughters Shauna and Amy Redford.
James Redford's wife Kyle reported on her husband's death on Twitter and wrote of a "beautiful and eventful" life.
They went through life as a husband and wife for 32 years, and their children had stood by their side in the past few years.
The "San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation" also expressed sadness over the death of James Redford.
The non-profit organization, which works for firefighters who have an increased risk of cancer because of their occupation, said: "The fire department has lost another great ally."
James Redford stood for humanity and was concerned about the welfare and safety of firefighters and the preservation of the environment, according to the post published on Facebook.
"Jamie is no longer here, but his legacy will live on in the great works he has produced," the organization wrote of James Redford.
In his documentation "Toxic Hot Seat" he reported extensively on the dangers for fire fighters from carcinogenic substances.
In addition to being a filmmaker, James Redford was the founder of the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness, with which he promoted organ and tissue donation.
According to the website, he had to wait six months for a vital liver transplant.
