According to a new study, people who do not eat meat have a higher risk of suffering all kinds of fractures.

People who eat plant-based diets and do not eat any type of meat may be at higher risk of fracture, according to a new study by the University of Oxford.

This research, published in the scientific journal 'BMC Medicine', found that people who do not eat meat, particularly vegans, have a high risk of suffering total or localized fractures, especially in the hip.

The study involved 54,858 people with an average age of 50, between 1993 and 2001, and they were divided into four categories: meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans.

At the end of the investigation, the specialists found that vegetarians increased the risk of suffering any type of fracture by 9%, while vegans had a risk of 43%, compared to people who ate meat.

In the specific case of hip fractures, vegans had 2.3 times the risk of suffering them, while vegetarians and those who ate fish only increased the risk by 25%.

The risk was found to be lowered when calcium and protein intake were taken into account.

"The increased risks of fractures, especially in vegans, remained significant after adjusting for calcium and dietary protein," the researchers noted.

One of the possible reasons found was that people on these types of diets tend to have lower body mass index compared to those who eat meat.

"Vegetarians and vegans generally have a lower body mass index than carnivores, and previous studies have reported an inverse association between BMI and some fractures, particularly hip fractures," the study reveals.
