In Ireland, the entire population will be reconfined from Wednesday evening, its Prime Minister Micheal Martin announced on Monday.

The confinement will last six weeks, he said, while stressing that schools would remain open to preserve "the future of our children and our young people".

All non-essential businesses will have to close, bars and restaurants can only serve take-out food.

"We ask everyone in the country to stay at home," said Micheal Martin, whose compatriots can however leave their homes to exercise within a radius of five kilometers around their place of residence.

“If we come together for the next six weeks, we will have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas properly,” he said.

Wales will be subject to a two-week lockdown from Friday, the hardest measure introduced in the United Kingdom since the first wave of Covid-19 in the spring.
