They found drugs with her, handcuffed the woman - and she was released for sex: Two police officers from New York have admitted the allegations in court. A prosecutor spoke of "shocking abuse of power."

In a spectacular case of police misconduct, the defendants confessed: Two New York City police admitted to trial of having run a suspect against sex. The men pleaded guilty to corruption and misconduct, as reported by several US media.

Background is an incident of September 2017. At that time, the men controlled an 18-year-old in southern New York's Coney Island. They found marijuana with her, handcuffed her, and took her to a police van, according to the New York Times.

According to CNN, surveillance videos show that the young woman left the van about 40 minutes after being arrested. The police made no report on the incident.

The 18-year-old later accused the men of having raped her. The DNA of both men was found on her, the prosecutor accused the police. But the woman became involved in contradictions - the rape allegation was dropped.

"We are outraged"

The judge reportedly said he would sentence the police to a five-month probation sentence in October. The prosecutor said he would rather have seen her in prison. It is about "shocking abuse of power". But because of her confession, they are soon to be convicted offenders. The woman's lawyer said, "We are outraged." The announced verdict was intolerable and a bad sign for victims of police violence.

The men voluntarily left the police service in November 2017. The originally charged rape allegation they rejected, the sex had been amicable. One of the defense attorneys told The New York Times that the woman offered sex and the police had agreed.

The case led to a change in the law. Consensual sex of police with people in custody was legal in New York - now it's illegal.
