2019-11-18T06:10:55.544Z

Snow, continuous rain and mudslides set in Austria. In Carinthia, residents are called upon not to leave their homes. Schools in East Tyrol should be closed.

In the Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Carinthia, the situation is intensifying due to heavy snow and rain. Some places were cut off from the outside world - in Carinthia, among other things, the Lesachtal, the Mölltal and the municipality of Heiligenblut were affected. This was reported by the "Kleine Zeitung".

The inhabitants were called not to leave their homes. Several buildings were evacuated. In East Tyrol schools should be closed because of the highest avalanche and weather warning levels.

In Carinthia, several lakes overflowed. Lake Faak near Villach led a flood on late Sunday evening, as statistically occurs only every 100 years. Since the night on Saturday, the level had risen by about 40 centimeters to 140 centimeters. This was shown by online measurement data.

Flood around Lake Faak

In Lavamünd the peak of the flood is expected only on Monday morning. There, a mobile flood protection was built, the center is closed.

In the municipality of Bad Gastein in the province of Salzburg, according to the news agency APA, a mudslide settled on two residential buildings during the night. Two people could be saved.

Heavy rain and snow had led in Austria on weekends to numerous Muren- and avalanches and power outages. For security reasons, many roads had to be closed.

Situation remains tense in the next few days

During the night, rain and snowfall were expected to slowly subside, according to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics. In the night on Tuesday and on Tuesday itself, it could rain and snow in places in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. The rainfall should then not be so great, but the situation remains tense.

Even in South Tyrol heavy snowfalls on Sunday had caused havoc. The climax of the precipitation is reached, the situation should calm down in the course of the night, tweeted national meteorologist Dieter Peterlin. In the greater part of South Tyrol, between 50 and 70 liters of precipitation per square meter have been registered in the last 24 hours. Later on Monday it should rain or snow again.

Meanwhile, in Venice, after the day-long flood alert, there is some relaxation in sight. Lower water levels are expected for the coming days, communicated the community on Sunday evening. The schools should open again on Monday.

There are still storm warnings in other parts of Italy. The situation was particularly tense in the regions of Emilia-Romagna around Bologna and in Tuscany. The civil defense warned against further flooding.
