Blankenburg: Deadly explosion

In an explosion in an apartment building in Saxony-Anhalt, a human died. The police discovered ammunition in the building, among other things - and corrected the number of injured.



According to police, fewer people were injured in the fatal explosion in Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains than initially thought. As a police spokesman said, 15 people were injured, some of them seriously. Among them were four officials with smoke poisoning. Initially, the police were out of about 25 injured.

A 78-year-old, whose apartment had the morning explosion, was found dead. Task Force found there also several bottles of LPG and World War II ammunition.

"According to current information, the explosion was triggered by LPG," said the police. How exactly this happened is unclear. The affected area was cordoned off over a wide area.

On a photo, which the investigators spread, are to be seen destruction on the windows of a flat on the first floor, soot traces pull up the facade. According to police, a fire followed the explosion.

The building is located on the edge of the 20,000-inhabitant city in Saxony-Anhalt. In the neighborhood there is a primary school and a day care center. From this, about a hundred children were housed in other facilities, as the institution announced.

The statics of the apartment building should be checked during the day. "The tiles in the new building block have shifted," said district fire chief Kai -Uwe Lohse. Forces also searched for a missing person in the meantime. Later, however, was given all-clear, as Lohse said. No one is missing anymore.
