Two hundred masterpieces, 50 from the Uffizi, for the most spectacular monographic ever dedicated to Raphael in 500 years since his death, will open on March 5 at the Scuderie del Quirinale. With the maxi-exhibition in Rome the celebrations for the artist will culminate worldwide: more than one hundred works by the hand of Urbino will never be brought together, never together before. A large monographic exhibition, with over two hundred masterpieces of paintings, drawings and comparative works, dedicated to Raffaello Sanzio, superstar of the Renaissance, on the 500th anniversary of his death, which took place in Rome on April 6, 1520 at just 37 years old.
The exhibition, entitled simply RAFFAELLO, constitutes the pinnacle of world celebrations and represents the flagship event of the program approved by the National Committee specifically instituted by Minister Dario Franceschini and chaired by Antonio Paolucci. Realized by the Scuderie del Quirinale (belonging to the Presidency of the Republic and managed by Mibact through the in-house company ALES), in collaboration with the Uffizi Galleries, the exhibition is curated by Marzia Faietti and Matteo Lafranconi with the contribution of Vincenzo Farinella and Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro.
An authoritative scientific committee chaired by Sylvia Ferino supported and deepened the work of the curatorial team, stimulating a fruitful dialogue between the most accredited sector specialists in the world, such as Nicholas Penny (former director of the National Gallery in London), Barbara Jatta (director of the Vatican Museums ), Dominique Cordellier (Musée du Louvre), Achim Gnann (Albertina, Vienna), Alessandro Nova (Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence).
On the occasion of the exhibition, a huge body of works by Raphael was collected: over 100, including paintings and drawings, for a collection of creations from the Urbino never seen in the world in so many numbers all together. Also in terms of loaned masterpieces (as well as scientific work done), the contribution of the Uffizi Galleries was decisive, with about 50 works, more than 40 of which by Raphael himself.
However, as far as we learn, there will be no heavyweights in the Uffizi room dedicated to the masterpieces of Michelangelo and Urbinate such as the portraits of the spouses Doni and the Madonna del Cardellino. This is also because the exhibition is conceived as a dialogue between the capital and Florence: so that the Rome exhibition can be completed by Raphael's works which will remain in place in Florence. But also many other museums of international importance have contributed to enrich the exhibition: the National Galleries of Ancient Art, the National Art Gallery of Bologna, the Museum and Real Bosco di Capodimonte, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, the Brescia Museums Foundation, and abroad, in addition to the Vatican Museums, the Louvre, the National Gallery of London, the Prado Museum, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Albertina in Vienna, the British Museum, the Royal Collection, the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford, the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Lille. Overall, more than 200 works will be on display.
The exhibition, which finds inspiration particularly in Raphael's fundamental Roman period and who consecrated him as an artist of unparalleled and legendary grandeur, tells the whole complex and articulated creative path with richness of detail. It will include beloved and famous creations all over the world, such as, just to name a few, the Madonna del Granduca from the Uffizi Galleries, the Santa Cecilia from the Pinacoteca in Bologna, the Madonna Alba from the National Gallery in Washington, the Portrait of Baldassarre Castiglione and the Self-portrait with friend from the Louvre, the Madonna della Rosa dal Prado, the famous Veiled again from the Uffizi. The exhibition will be inaugurated on March 3, 2020 in the presence of the highest state offices and official representatives of the main lending countries.
From March 5th the exhibition will open to the public and will be open until June 2nd. For Franceschini '' is a great European exhibition that brings together masterpieces never assembled so far. The right way to celebrate the greatness and fame of a universal artist 500 years after his death. The prestigious exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale, which like the one dedicated to Leonardo in the Louvre sees the collaboration of the greatest Italian and international museums, will allow the public to admire a considerable body of Raphael's works ".
For the president and at Ales- Scuderie del Quirinale Mario Di Simoni the exhibition '' is the demonstration of how correct the positioning of the Scuderie del Quirinale is in close connection with the great system of state museums. It is the ideal culmination of the twenty years of opening to the public of the Quirinale Stables. "Finally, the director of the Uffizi Galleries Erike Schmidt says:" The Uffizi Galleries, where the largest number of Raphael paintings and drawings in the world is concentrated , participate enthusiastically in the organization of this epochal anniversary, to offer a new, in-depth vision of Raphael, especially for the period in which the artist lived in Rome. The exhibition, the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the Uffizi Galleries and the Quirinale Stables, is held not by chance in the capital: Rome is not only a biographical stop for the artist, but a symbol of the national dimension of his art and his thought
