The night of New Year's Eve was again agitated for the police in Strasbourg. This year, twice as many vehicles were set on fire compared to 2019. More people were arrested and the number of injured officials is also on the rise for the start of 2020. According to the local newspaper "The Latest News from 'Alsace', at least 220 cars were burned and around forty people linked to these incidents are said to be in police custody.
"We have seen a rise in vehicle fires since Halloween and for two weekends the phenomenon has accelerated, also with the use of mortars, devices that can seriously injure police or firefighters," says Annie. Brégal, departmental director of public security in the Bas-Rhin.
The mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries, meanwhile launched on Monday on social networks an appeal "for calm and respect for others".
