Solidarity competition between the mothers of Rome and Lazio for the little patients of the Baby Jesus: donations of breast milk doubled in the year just ended. With 133 new mothers who donated a total of 758 liters of milk, the hospital announced. In 2018 the Banca del Latte Umato Donato (BLUD) of the Bambino Gesù, the only one in Lazio, collected, pasteurized and distributed to sick children 362 liters of the precious food received from 43 nurses. Most of the breast milk collected in 2019 was made available to 229 infants with special therapeutic needs hospitalized in the Pediatric Hospital, about 200 liters (25% of the total) were instead delivered to other Neonatal Intensive Therapies of the Lazio Region.
Thanks to the new car for the collection of breast milk at home donated to the Hospital by the Centrale del Latte in Rome, in 2019 the service of the Bank of breast milk of the Child Jesus was enhanced and it was possible to widen the collection radius from the area of Rome to the entire Lazio Region, reaching even the most distant donors (30 against 5 in 2018). "They can donate all healthy mothers, who follow a correct lifestyle and have a quantity of milk higher than the needs of their child from the first weeks of life up to one year of age", explains Guglielmo Salvatori, head of Nutrition Education neonatal and BLUD.
"Donating milk is a precious gesture for many sick children.
It costs nothing, it is not painful and it is very simple. "In Lazio the only bank of reference for mothers who wish to become donors is the one inside the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital. The milk collection service at home of the Bambino Gesù is active every morning, Monday to Friday, for information, including how to become a donor, the number 06 6859 2948 or the email bancadellatte@opbg.net.
