A 25-year-old Jewish tourist who recently arrived in Israel after a stay in China was admitted to Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer after feeling ill. It was sent to isolation for fear of being infected with the corona virus that is currently spreading in China and has taken the lives of more than 100 people.

When the young woman emerged from the isolation herself, it was decided to issue her a forced hospitalization order to prevent the spread of the virus, if she did.

The health system notes that if he were a citizen of Israel, he would have been taken for tests and he would have been required to stay in his home. But in this case, the tourist had no place to stay and she planned to go on a trip to Jerusalem. The health system also explained that the young woman had left the isolation room instead of waiting for her - and therefore the order was issued to her.

This week, Minister of Health Yaakov Litzman signed a public health ordinance allowing the Ministry of Health to expand the authority to deal with the disease. Section 19 of the ordinance allows the Ministry of Health to declare a state of infectious disease outbreak, and impose a prison sentence or a fine on those who do not vaccinate. This section has only been used twice in the history of the state, the first time being a few decades ago.

At present, there is a fear of contracting the disease in the country in two other cases: A Chinese citizen was hospitalized yesterday evening in the isolation of Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon with signs of infection in Corona. Earlier, a woman in her 60s was rushed to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv and admitted to the Department of Emergency Medicine with fever and signs of respiratory illness. She was put in solitary confinement and the hospital said her condition was good.

The Association of Public Health Doctors backs the Ministry of Health's decision to authorize forced hospitalization as an unusual step: "The Corona virus poses a threat to public health in the world and in Israel. We are currently at a relatively early stage of the global outbreak and still without a verified case in Israel, especially at this stage there is room to exercise authority for the protection of public health and to take strict measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

"The political echelon should back up the professional echelon and make decisions first and foremost on the basis of public health considerations. Signs of illness and adherence to spread prevention rules, and appropriate supervision of the implementation of guidelines.

"Suspicious cases of illness must be isolated and, if necessary, enforced, in accordance with the authority of public health doctors. The arrival of sick people in the virus to Israel is probably inevitable, but we can prevent and reduce the spread of the virus in Israel."
