The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned France on Thursday for the conditions of detention in overcrowded prisons, without however making the "pilot judgment" hoped for by the International Prison Observatory urging it to act.
Seized by 32 prisoners from the prisons of Nice, Nîmes, Fresnes, Ducos (Martinique) and Nuutania (Polynesia), the ECHR recommends that the State "consider adopting general measures aimed at eliminating overcrowding and improving conditions of detention, "according to a press release issued by the Court.
According to the International Prisons Observatory on Thursday, 39 French prisons were considered to expose people detained to inhuman or degrading treatment by French justice and / or by the European Court of Human Rights.
