Forget about Pilates: To prevent cancer and heart disease you have to sweat

Pilates, yoga, walking in the park or designing and shaping exercises are very popular, and rightly so - they have a lot of benefits. However, a new study reveals that women who choose high-intensity workouts earn even more, much more. According to the study, women who are able to cope with such workouts, such as functional workouts, running or kickboxing - are less likely to die of heart disease, cancer and other causes.

The researchers, from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, tested eco-heart tests for women, and found that those who can exercise at high intensity are in better health. The researchers examined two groups of women, most of them aged 50-75, and followed them for an average of five years.

The findings of the study showed that women with better exercise ability were able to train with the power of 10 or more METS during heart echo. METS is a measure of the amount of energy burned during an activity, and is also a sign of the intensity of exercise. Any training that achieves more than 6 METS results is considered "intensive training." For example, a 10-minute run is measured at about 10 METs, and pedaling uphill is considered to be 14 METs.

The researchers found that women with poor physical fitness were four times more likely to die of heart disease than women with good exercise ability. Women with poor exercise capacity were also twice as likely to die from cancer, and nearly four times as likely to die from other diseases, compared to high-fitness women.

It should be noted that the study examined the results of women in stress tests, hence their fitness, but we did not examine what women do to reach such fitness levels. In fact, the MET results are a sign of maximum capabilities, which are usually achieved through persistence in high-intensity training, but this has not been tested scientifically.

The study in question was presented last month at EuroEcho 2019, a scientific meeting of the European Society of Cardiology. The study has not yet been published in a scientific journal and has not yet been peer reviewed, so its results are still in doubt. However, his findings are certainly consistent with past research. For example, a 2017 study in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Disease examined the conclusions of some significant and large-scale studies and found that the life expectancy of people who run about three years is longer than that of non-runners.

Another study published this year found that running once a week can reduce the risk of premature death by 25 percent. The analysis involving more than 230,000 people found that among those who regularly went running - no matter how fast or far away - there were much lower death rates. And if that's not enough to convince you to wear your running shoes, you should know that another study found that women who did 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day was 21 percent more likely to reach 90, compared to women who did less than half an hour of exercise. For women who have been exercising for more than 60 minutes a day, the chance of reaching age 90 has actually dropped, so don't overdo it.
