The accident in Lodi has the heavy toll of two deaths, but the history of Italy recalls many serious railway disasters. Here is a summary of the main ones.

- The most serious ever dates back to March 2, 1944 , when the Salerno-Potenza train stopped in the tunnel in Balvano (PZ) and 526 people died asphyxiated.

- 23 Dec 1961 - On the Cosenza-Catanzaro line, two kilometers before the Catanzaro station, a wagon derails the curve at the mouth of the bridge over the Fiumarella stream and ends in a ravine: 70 dead and 27 injured - 8 March 1962 - In Castelbolognese (RA), the very direct Bari-Milan derailed upon entering the station, 13 dead and 80 injured.

- May 31, 1962 - In Voghera (PV) clash between a freight train and a passenger train: 63 dead and 40 injured.

- 15 Apr 1978 - In Murazze di Vado (BO) the locomotive of the Lecce-Milan express train hits the rapid "Arrow of the Lagoon" Bolzano-Rome for a landslide which derails: 48 dead and 76 injured.

- 10 Jul 1979 - In Cercola (NA), head-on collision between two trains of the "Circumvesuviana": 14 dead and 70 injured.

- 2 Nov 1980 - Between the stations of Curinga and Ottimo (CZ), a train coming from Rome hits the wagons uncoupled from a freight train coming from Catania: 20 dead and 112 injured.

- 22 Dec 1985 - In Coronella (FE), an electric railcar crashes into a freight train that stops at a traffic light. 10 people die and 11 are injured.

- 3 Apr 1989 - In San Severo (FG), the local train from Bari enters the station at excessive speed: 8 dead and 20 injured.

- 16 Nov 1989 - In Crotone, clash between two local trains to and from Catanzaro: 12 dead and 32 injured.

- 12 Jan 1997 - In Piacenza, the Pendolinò train (Etr 460) derailed 300 meters from the station, while traveling from Milan to Rome: 8 dead and 29 injured. Among the travelers who remained unharmed, the President emeritus of the Republic Francesco Cossiga.

- 20 Jul 2002 - In Rometta Marea (ME), the Palermo-Venice train derails. The probable cause is the maintenance work of the line, performed in a not perfect way. The dead are 8.

- 7 Jan 2005 - An interregional train and a freight train with steel beams collide head-on a few steps from the Bolognina di Crevalcore station, on the Bologna-Verona single-track line. There are 17 dead, 15 injured.

- Jun 29, 2009 - For a broken axle, a railway convoy carrying LPG derailed while crossing the Viareggio station. Four tanks tipped over. In one a hole of 40 centimeters opened, from which the gas came out. Three minutes later, the explosions devastated an entire neighborhood and killed 32 people.

- 12 Apr 2010 - The regional train R108 derails due to a landslide in the section of the line between Castelbello and Laces, at a point where the tracks cross a narrow gorge. Balance 9 dead and 28 injured.

- 12 Jul 2016 - Two trains of the Ferrotramviaria company collide along the Bari-Barletta railway between the stations of Andria and Corato. 23 people die, fifty injured.

- 25 Jan 2018 - In Pioltello, on the outskirts of Milan, the regional train 10452 derailed causing the death of three people and almost one hundred injured. The lawsuit, highlighted the prosecutor during the trial, the failure of a joint in poor condition and never replaced.
