Maira Yanet Torres, a five-year-old girl from the Wichí community of San Luis, in Santa Victoria Este, in Salta, died this Friday morning. As reported by the newspaper El Tribuno "was not malnourished", suffered a generalized infection , which they evaluate may have resulted from respiratory disease. It is the seventh infant death of the Wichí community so far in 2020.

The girl died in the presence of the Minister of Health of the province , Josefina Medrano, who visited the hospital and, according to local media, rolled up her sleeves and tried to save her with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers.

Medrano told El Tribuno : "When I arrived at the hospital, the doctors were resuscitating a 5-year-old girl. I am a pediatrician so I joined the actions and did an advanced CPR, but the girl died unfortunately. It was from a distant place at 7 kilometers from the hospital and was treated first in the health center of his place. The nurse reported that 36 hours before he had diarrhea, which then the girl reported chest and stomach pain, abruptly deteriorated her picture, then drifts her to the hospital and there occurs death".

In turn, he clarified that " the girl had no malnutrition , had normal weight." From this he analyzed: "The lack of water, the lack of everything here is decisive. Even the water tanks are in poor condition, sanitation, hygiene problems, the state of health structures, schools, the roads destroyed, the threat of the Pilcomayo, all adds up to the chaos in the region. It takes a real diagnosis and the commitment of all the actors in society to achieve positive changes. "

In this regard, he added: "We have to achieve a radical and very deep change respecting the culture of our native peoples. I know it won't be overnight."

Visibly affected by Maira's death, the minister explained: "It is impressive that she had a respiratory infection; an autopsy will not be done because the community does not allow it, they are living a very sad situation."

The governor of Salta, Gustavo Sáenz, declared this week the socio-sanitary emergency in the departments of San Martín, Rivadavia and Oran, after the first six deaths and the worsening of the health of another ten minors, who remain in risky situation.

The measure is valid for 180 days and aims to meet the food, health and safe water needs of the inhabitants.

"We will direct our greatest efforts to immediately assist the most vulnerable sectors with priority measures and actions in search of overcoming solutions that remain in time, " said Sáenz on Twitter.

The governor also referred to the importance of making visible the structural problems of Salta. “I am not ashamed to show reality, it saddens me and this situation hurts. There is a deep north that hurts and strikes, we have many people suffering, without water, without health services in good condition, ”he said.

He also pointed out the need for dialogue with communities: "We must work together to end this historic debt."

The Minister of Social Development of the Nation, Daniel Arroyo, acknowledged this week that the situation in northern Salta "is very serious" and reported that "there are already Ministry teams working in the area next to the Army."

Representatives of the United Nations, UNICEF, WHO / PAHO, European Union and the Red Cross also met Friday in Salta capital with members of native peoples, social and academic organizations, with whom they analyzed “the socio-health emergency declared by the province afterwards of the death of children in the community ”.

For Arroyo, the biggest problem in the region is “ water, ” and he explained: “Because kids drink water in poor condition, they end up having diarrhea and dehydration. From there comes the problem of malnutrition. ”
