First message from Thursday, January 16, 2020, 12 p.m .: WhatsApp is the most used messenger in Germany, too. 40 million users speak a clear language. But be careful. With the wrong settings, the messenger quickly turns into a data and power guzzler. With our tips you keep control over your consumption.

WhatsApp: Internet and power consumption - disable auto download

In order to save mobile data volume with WhatsApp , it is advisable not to download photos, videos and voice messages automatically. All you have to do is turn off the automatic download function. To do this, users on Android and IOS control the "Data and memory usage" menu item in the settings.

There it is possible to select which media should only be downloaded with a WLAN connection or in the mobile network. This includes media such as photos, videos, audio files and documents. Tip: To save as much data volume as possible, select WLAN as the default setting for the download for all media types. If the cell phone is not in a WiFi network, users can also download a video manually.

WhatsApp and the Internet: create backups via WLAN

WhatsApp backups of chat histories can also be turned. The backups should only be created via a WLAN network. Otherwise, the smartphone dials into the Internet via the mobile data volume. To perform a backup, select iCloud or Google Drive WLAN under the settings.

WhatsApp: Avoid making calls over the Internet

Who does not know it? Make calls via WhatsApp. But this also has its disadvantage, because when using the phone, Internet consumption quickly increases. According to the colleagues from chip.de, around 0.9 to 1.5 MB of volume should be generated per minute of conversation. Mobile network reception also affects the quality of the call. Rule of thumb therefore: the better the quality, the more data volume is used.

If you have a contract with little volume, you should better avoid calling via WhatsApp. And if you still want to make a phone call, activate the "Reduced data consumption" function under Android and iOS under the menu item Data and memory usage. However, this reduces the quality of the connection.

WhatsApp: keep an eye on battery and power consumption

If you send a lot of photos, videos and voice messages via WhatsApp, this can quickly increase the battery consumption of the smartphone. But here, too, users can reduce consumption. For example, by restarting the cell phone. It is also worth clearing the WhatsApp cache. To do this, open the settings.

There you select "WhatsApp" and "Storage" and tap on "Clear cache". The next step is to download the current WhatsApp version for Android or iOS. If all of this does not help, then users should consider reinstalling the app.

Alternatively, users can also regulate the display brightness of their smartphone. Means: the brighter the screen shines, the more battery the cell phone subsequently uses. It is worthwhile to keep an eye on the display controls from time to time.
