Japan announced Thursday that it has confirmed 44 more infections on board the quarantine cruise in its waters and has decided to authorize the landing of certain people over 80 years of age and patients who are negative to end the isolation on land.

There are already 218 cases detected by coronavirus in the Princess Diamond cruise ship, whose around 3,700 passengers (between travelers and crew) were quarantined on February 3 in waters in front of the port of the city of Yokohama, south of Tokyo, after knowing that a passenger who landed in Hong Kong was a carrier of the virus.

In his daily press conference to report the results on board, Japan's Minister of Health, Katsunobu Kato, explained that these positives are included in the tests done on 221 people .

Taking into account about thirty cases detected on land, Japan has already confirmed 247 affected by coronaviruses under its jurisdiction, the largest number outside China, where the infected are around 60,000, of which more than 1,300 have died.

The Ministry of Health also announced its decision to authorize the landing of those over 80 years of age with underlying health problems whose rooms do not have a window (or do not open) and chronically ill people in general who test negative for the virus and agree to terminate the quarantine period in facilities designated by the Government.

Of the 2,666 passengers who were aboard the ship when the quarantine began (those who tested positive were already transferred to hospital centers), 226 are over 80 years old.

The Japanese authorities asked the cruise passengers to stay inside their rooms during the quarantine period decreed, which expires on Wednesday 19.

The possibility that the Japanese Government allowed the landing of elderly passengers had been considered for several days, after medical experts pointed out that the stress generated by remaining so long locked in the ship could aggravate the health of many of them.

Among the passengers were eight Argentine citizens, seven who are still in quarantine aboard the cruise ship, "who are isolated and have no symptoms", and one who was diagnosed with the disease and "improves" in the Japanese hospital where he remains hospitalized.
