2020-02-14T16:29:58.062Z

Every Friday, Le Parisien offers a selection of programs from the Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, MyCanal and OCS platforms.

Friday is series (and movies too). On the eve of the weekend, the Parisian offers a selection of fictions, feature films, documentaries not to be missed on online video platforms. On the program especially this week: season 2 of the series "Narcos: Mexico", a great documentary on the assassination of Malcolm X, a gem of French comedy with "Roxane", and the continuation of the political tribulations of "Baron Noir "...

NETFLIX

The impactful series: "Narcos: Mexico"

After an already exciting first season, the second one, which has just started, competes squarely with "the Godfather", both in terms of production, script quality and acting. This, in particular because the program goes even further in its demonstration of active corruption in Mexico. Politicians, soldiers, police, everyone goes there. Some surnames have even been paged to avoid the trials of those whose posterity had, until then, only retained the virtuous side.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 5/5

“Narcos: Mexico” , an American drama series by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro and Chris Brancato (2018), with Diego Luna, Michael Peña, Scoot McNairy… Season 2. Ten episodes of 45 minutes at 1:05 am.

The green film: "Okja"

Between a green fable and a thriller for a big show, this film by Bong Joon-ho, a South Korean director who has just won the Oscar with “Parasite”, tells how, in a future where famine is the number one scourge, a multinational is developing a genetically modified breed of pig. Okja is one of them, pampered on a farm until a multinational decides to recover it ... Released directly on Netflix in 2017, this film contains breathtaking action scenes and others very poetic . And we love his hero, as mischievous as he is clumsy.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

“Okja” , by Bong Joon-ho (2017), with Seo Hyun Ahn, Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal… 1h58.

The fascinating documentary: "Who killed Malcom X?"

One more ! After "Gregory", "Our planet", Netflix unveils a new exciting documentary series, this time on Malcom X. A certain mystery still reigns around the shooting which cost the life of the African-American activist, in 1965. This program in six episodes follows the work of historian Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, a great specialist in the life of the man known as the "black messiah". An exciting investigation that takes on the air of a thriller, so impressive is his ant work.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"Who killed Malcolm X?" , American documentary series by Rachel Dretzin and Phil Bertelsen. 6 x 45 min.

The police series: "The Listener"

In the vein of series that portray somewhat special investigators, "The Listener" has gone rather unnoticed in France. However, this Canadian fiction whose hero is a telepathic paramedic is very nice. Incarnated by Craig Olejnik, Toby Logan can read the minds of others from an early age. It was not until he was an adult that he decided to use this power to save lives and even resolve investigations. If we like the discreet charm of this central character with a mysterious past, we love the humor and enthusiasm of his best friend and teammate, Oz. This is played by Ennis Esmer, now in the credits of the series "Blindspot".

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

“The Listener” , Canadian series by Michael Amo (2009-2014) with Craig Olejnik, Ennis Esmer… Five seasons of 13 episodes each (65 x 42 minutes).

The film to rediscover: "A Vampire in Brooklyn"

There was a time when Eddie Murphy was a fashionable comedian, and really funny. "A Vampire in Brooklyn" is one of his last really interesting films, before a long crossing of the desert. It must be said that it is directed by the great Wes Craven (all "Scream"), who uses the actor to mix comedy and fantasy in this story where a Caribbean blood sucker arrives in New York to find the soul mate. A curiosity that deserves to be rediscovered.

MYCANAL

The political series: "Black Baron"

A goldsmith's precision. Season 3 of "Black Baron" is a little gem. Philippe Rickwaert, masterfully embodied by Kad Merad, is back. The socialist tenor, rogue and strategist, launches headlong into the battle for the presidential election, after his release from prison and his conviction for embezzlement. The French political landscape is meticulously described here. And the intrigue led by Eric Benzekri, co-creator of the series, former PS activist close to Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Julien Dray, has never seemed so close to reality. François Morel is at the top of his game there.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"Black Baron" , season 3, 10 episodes. French series by Eric Benzekri and Jean-Baptiste Delafon, With Kad Merad, Anna Mouglalis, François Morel…

The sensual film: "Call Me By Your Name"

Summer 1983, under the Italian sun. Elio spends his holidays in a beautiful villa with his parents. He reads, plays classical music and flirts with his friend Marzia. One day, Oliver, an attractive American student who works with his father, arrives. Elio will be disturbed by his presence… Bathed in magnificent warm lights, “Call Me By Your Name” is the story of a first love. The feature is brilliantly staged and interpreted by solar and natural actors (Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Esther Garrel…). Delicate, erotic, overwhelming, it is one of those films that leave a burning memory.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

“Call Me By Your Name” , by Luca Guadagnino (2017), with Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg… 2h11.

SCO

The planing series: "High Maintenance", season 4

It's a series that doesn't look like much, but has been making its way since 2016. In "High Maintenance", we follow a man whose name we don't know, who delivers marijuana by bicycle. He thus travels New York, and through each client, it is a small slice of life which is revealed to the viewer. Some reappear in several episodes, others do not. Put together, these fleeting portraits form an unexpected picture of American society, with its share of incongruities, tenderness, loneliness ... At the start of season 4, a one-eyed dog becomes fond of the hero, constrained to adopt it. A situation as improbable and endearing as the rest of the series.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"High Maintenance" , an American series by Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, with Ben Sinclair. Season 4 (2020), episode 1/9. 29 minutes (a new episode added every Saturday).

The pretty comedy: "Roxane"

Raymond, a small organic egg producer and fan of Edmond Rostand's play "Cyrano de Bergerac", is taken by the throat by the prices imposed by his cooperative. Faced with the announced death of his farm, the farmer is looking for an original way, on social networks, to save his farm and his chickens, including Roxane, whom the concerns of his boss do not leave indifferent. Jewel of relevant and tender comedy, this film, which is the first feature film by a young director, is one of those from which we emerge moved.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

“Roxane” , French dramatic comedy by Mélanie Auffret (2019), with Guillaume de Tonquédec, Léa Drucker, Lionel Abelanski… 1h25.
