The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has announced that it has disqualified Ustyugov for two years and that the gold won in Sochi in the men's relay will be revoked. A 2014 biathlete test tested positive for a steroid and the results obtained by Ustyugov in the 2013-2014 season will therefore be canceled. The Ibu also declared null and void the results obtained by Svetlana Sleptsova in the same season, who also tested positive for a steroid.
Sleptsova however didn't win any titles during that time.
The investigation is based on the analysis of data from the Moscow doping laboratory, at the center of the state doping scandal in Russia. According to Russian media reports, Russia should lose the top spot in the Sochi medal collection and be overtaken by Norway and Canada. The head of the Union of Russian Biathletes told Tass that both Ustyugov and Sleptsova intend to challenge the decision of the Ibu.
Last December, the world anti-doping agency (Wada) excluded Russia from the main international sports competitions for four years, and therefore also from the Tokyo Olympics. According to anti-doping officials, the Russians falsified the laboratory data handed over to investigators in January 2019 in order to cover up numerous doping cases.
