Apps to help you eat healthier

2020-02-18T10:48:00.702Z

With the general awareness that our health comes in part from our plate, many applications have emerged to

Knowing all that makes up the industrial food products we consume, finding healthier alternatives or for cooking yourself, this is the challenge that all these smartphone applications are launching for us.

Be careful, the purpose of these applications is not to demonize too fatty or too sweet products, but to realize that it is necessary to limit consumption to be healthier.

On the other hand, additives, if we can avoid them, it's better ... and if we can cook our own little dishes, it's even better!

Know what we eat

Yuka

The most popular application to scan products and check their composition is of course Yuka . Very simple to use and free, Yuka is a French application for Android and iOS.

From the barcode of the products, Yuka is able to inform you about the composition of the product: sugars, calories, saturated fats, additives, proteins, salt…

With a color code and a rating of 100, you can easily spot a food or cosmetic that is healthy or not. Poor, poor, good or excellent, you will know in a few moments the defects and the qualities of the product analyzed.

Even with a base of more than 700,000 food products and 300,000 cosmetics, it is possible to scan products that are not there. As a user and consumer, you have the possibility of participating in the enrichment of the database by filling in the essential information of non-referenced products. If you are scanning a product that is not in the database, the application will offer to save it and guide you step by step through the different components to be informed.

Yuka is also able to offer you better alternatives to scanned products that have a poor rating.

We appreciate the modern and clear interface of the application as well as the readability of the information on the scanned products, which allows us to know at a glance whether the food is good for our health or not. On the other hand, it is a pity that the products of supermarkets are in the majority and it will be necessary to wait a little longer or to inform more products so that alternative signs and less known brands are referenced.

Open Food facts

Offering a more substantial database than Yuka with its 1135600 referenced products, Open Food Facts is an application allowing you to scan your products and shed light on their composition, notably with the famous Nutriscore, which you can find on certain product packaging of great brand.

Free, free and collaborative, this non-profit project provides you with all the information on the amounts of fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt. You can also find out the labels, certifications and awards of the scanned product, as well as the code "NOVA" which indicates the level of transformation of the product, ranging from 1 for products with little processing to 4 for industrial ready meals.

Open Food Facts also provides the list of ingredients as well as more detailed data on nutritional benchmarks, in the nutrition tab.

A product comparison module allows you to scan several products of the same category and the application takes care of comparing the components to tell you which product obtains the best score and therefore represents a better choice for your health.

Although Yuka's interface is simpler and more user-friendly, Open Food Facts provides more product information and has a larger database. On the other hand, Yuka has elements on cosmetics while Open Food Facts only deals with food products.

Nutrition Score

Operating on the same principle as Yuka and Open Food Facts, the Nutrition Score application offers you to scan food products to obtain the famous nutri-score that some brands do not want to see affixed to their packaging, for fear of scaring the consumer away. .

The application thus displays the Nutriscore of the food product as well as the "Nova" code which indicates the level of processing of the product. Calories, amounts of fat (including saturated), sugar, salt and fiber are also present on the product sheet.

To supplement all this nutritional information and go further, the Nutrition Score application offers a tab "environmental impact" which informs you if certain ingredients of this product are subject to caution for the environment, such as palm oil for example.

We also appreciate the "Alerts" tab which highlights the allergenic components if there are any, as well as the module for searching by product name or entering barcode numbers. But the interface is much less pleasant and obtaining a score out of 20 after viewing an advertisement does not place Nutrition Score at the top of our selection.

Eat healthy

Foodvisor

Foodvisor is an important ally for your health objective. Whether you have decided to lose weight, eat healthier or gain muscle, this application for Android and iOS will help you with several practical tools.

Where the application becomes very interesting is that it displays the nutritional data of what you eat. All you need to do is scan the food or take a picture of your plate, in order to carry out an accurate analysis of what you have for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacking during the day. Seasonal fruits and vegetables

Eating healthier also means favoring short circuits and therefore seasonal fruits and vegetables. For this, the application Fruits and vegetables of the season will help you to know the food products to consume according to the season.

With today's date, the application will offer you not only the full season for varieties of fruits and vegetables but also for seafood, cheese and meat.

This information will not only be beneficial for your health, for the environment since you will favor short circuits, but also for your wallet because seasonal products are cheaper, because they are available in larger quantities during the full season.

We appreciate the nutritional information on the selected products. We like advertising less, even if they are used to pay developers ...

Etiquettable

To eat healthier, Etiquettable is at your service and provides you with valuable information to reach your goal. Here, no product scan but information on seasonal fruits and vegetables, endangered fish species, addresses of restaurants and shops engaged in sustainable, healthy and eco-responsible cuisine, or even recipes and articles on zero waste, gluten-free or vegan dishes, etc.

Pleasant, free and without advertising, Etiquettable is a collaborative application that allows all its users to share their recipe ideas and tips, while respecting the environment.

For each product displayed, you have complete information on the producing countries, the calendar of the seasons, the nutrients but also advice on choosing and storing these fruits and vegetables.

Offering a multitude of information on ethical and environment-friendly food, Etiquettable guides you step by step in the development of recipes proposed by also indicating the nutri-score and other interesting nutritional information.

Recipes that adapt to you

Youmiam

Youmiam is a cooking recipe app that will help you eat healthier, as long as you feel like it.

Available on Android and iOS, this ergonomic and very visual application quickly makes your mouth water. Operating as a social network, you have a community of more or less expert cooks who offer their gourmet and / or healthy recipes.

What we appreciate in Youmiam is not only the multitude of recipes available, but also the personalization of food constraints and specific diets which the application takes into account.

Whether you are cooking for a couple or a large family, whether you are a cordon bleu or a beginner in the kitchen, whether you are allergic to certain foods or whether you follow a paleo or vegan diet, the application adapts and recommends corresponding recipes.

The photos whet your appetite and you are quickly taken by the desire to cook good meals.

The search tool is also practical and ergonomic since users can follow a news feed with the latest recipes, search by ingredient, by theme, by recipe name, but also be guided by the application by filtering depending on the budget, the type of dish to cook, the preparation time you have and the difficulty of the recipe.

For your favorite recipes, you can add them to your "playlist" to find them more easily, or follow other cooks in the community to be alerted of their new recipes.

No nutritional information on food, nor on seasonal products, but only beautiful recipes that adapt to your diet, via an ultra practical and aesthetically attractive interface.

Foodle

As with other cooking recipe apps, eating healthy is up to you and how you want to cook. And that's where Foodle comes in.

Foodle combines the functionality of Youmiam which offers recipes adapted to your diet, the anti-waste tools of Frigo Magic by inviting you to search for recipes to cook what you have in your fridge first.

The little extra that we like in Foodle is the possibility of "composing a meal" and therefore of following several recipes on the same page. This tool also gives you ideas for accompaniment, or input to complete your meal.

For all those who have a food processor, the application provides recipes dedicated to you.

No nutri-score or indications on the nutritional values of the recipes but the possibility of creating a complete meal according to your desires, your diet, your allergies, your equipment and your time available to cook. It would also have been nice to be able to adapt the quantities of the ingredients according to the number of guests.

Anti-waste apps

Save Eat

Save Eat is also an application of cooking recipes but its credo is anti-waste!

Fill in what you have in your fridge and the application informs you of the approximate expiry date and alerts you when it is imminent.

In your cupboards, in your fridge, in your freezer, you spend a little time at the start to record all your ingredients, but once this step is completed, you just have to fill in the application as you make them races.

At the first connection, Save Eat invites you to answer a few questions about yourself and your cooking, in order to then propose recipes adapted according to the number of people to be fed and your culinary equipment.

The interface is a little less pleasant to handle with its slightly austere tabs. On the other hand, at the level of the recipes offered, the application makes the connection between the ingredients of your fridge and those necessary to make the recipe. If you are missing ingredients to complete the list, the application is able to immediately add it to a shopping list.

Like Youmiam, Save Eat invites you to eat healthy only if you want to and if you have the means. Making your own dishes is also a way of eating healthily and in an eco-responsible way by choosing local and seasonal products, and by avoiding consuming industrial dishes.

Magic Fridge

Frigo Magic is an application for Android and iOS that will help you compose recipes with what you have in your fridge.

At the first connection, it is a bit tedious to review all the food in your cupboards, your fridge and your freezer to indicate if you always, sometimes or never have it, but then, you just have to indicate the main element of your recipe and Frigo Magic will be responsible for selecting all the recipes containing this food.

And to reinforce your eco-responsible approach, the application informs you with a small calendar symbol that this product is in season.

You obviously have the option of performing a keyword search if you cannot find the ingredient that suits you.

We simply regret that the display of the recipes is in the form of a list and not as a news feed with pretty photos that make you want and that advertising videos are launched too often.

We appreciate, on the other hand, that when selecting the recipe, the ingredients are adjusted according to the content of our fridge and that a nutri-score is displayed to give an approximate indication of the nutritional values of the recipe. . You can also adjust the number of guests and the quantity of ingredients is calculated automatically.
