Salamanca, summer 1936. A state of war is declared, the socialist mayor arrested, the insurgents seize the city. The famous rector of the university, Miguel de Unamuno, who had been removed from office by the Republicans, will be restored by the Francoists, whom he supports first. In the midst of the arrests, soon of the executions, the author of the Tragic feeling of life, in his seventies, tries to maintain the rituals of daily life, between his family and his two close friends, Atiliano, pastor, and Salvador, professor of literature, which he finds every morning in a cafe in the center. Meanwhile, General Franco leaves North Africa with his junta, including the fearsome General Millan-Astray.
